Thanks to all the peoples that stopped at my lil' shared table space at NYCC 2011! I hope everyone who got a sketch or a Chibi came away satisfied. I plan on having an artist alley table all to myself next year.

Above is a sketch I did for a sketch club I've joined with my buddy Jd and his buddy Zachary Trover. Each week we pick a random character/ subject and go to town. This past week was "Dr.Who". I picked the Tom Baker ver. (the best Who ever IMO).

Being in a sketch club will be good for me, seeing as how I'm horrible about keeping this place updated.

Above is a poster I designed for the short film 'ANNUNCIO'. This was my first real time doing a portraiture painting so I was worried that I might not be able to pull it off. But surprisingly it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. The real challenge turned out to be the leather glove. Drawing hands has never been one of my stronger points ;)

A year ago a fellow colleague of mine REAU started a blog called Thor Thursday. Be sure to check it! The above piece is my contribution to his big finale in lieu of the release of the Thor movie this coming weekend.

As you can see I had a lot of fun with the subject matter. I was always a fan of the Japanese Spidey TV show. Plus with anime versions of the X-Men, Wolverine, & Iron Man being made I thought it proper to give Thor his time in the sun.

The paint style I used was really loose. I found it the best way to learn painting is to be just that, loose. Being uptight with how you work is only going to corner you. Go into a piece with this mindset, 'I don't give a Sh!t'. If you color outside the lines...fine! If the shadows you're dropping aren't %100 accurate...great! A great way to shake yourself free.

Above is the poster/t-shirt graphic I designed for the local Anime convention Zenkaikon V . I was playing around with a lot of gradients, which are a great way to color a piece rather quickly. I'm always inspired by a fellow illustrator/sensei of mine Ryusuke Hamamoto, who uses this technique a lot in his work. I also discovered this neat halftone technique that I used to liven up the background on the piece (another big up to Ryusuke for this one). Check out this vid to see how it's done!

If you follow my blog with the ofteness I've been working with the good people of Geekadelphia.com designing posters for their monthly movie screenings. Last time it was for an incredible screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. This time around it's for an awesome lil' film called Alien vs. Ninja. Yes, you heard me....ALIEN vs. Ninja! I was really hoping for a 'Ewoks vs. Ninja' or a 'Yeti vs. Ninja' adaption but with the cult success of AVN my dreams may yet come true. If you live in or around the Philadelphia region be sure to come out April 2nd for all the Midnight Madness! There'll be pony rides for the kids and a dog show during the intermission...oh wait, there won't be any of that. However, you will see plenny of Aliens battling Ninjas! ( hey how many times in life does one get to say that?!)

As for the poster I was trying to capture that 'Grindhouse' feel while being inspired by old wrestling posters from the 70's and 80's. Lots of cheesy slogans and catch phrases. Limited color scheme to boot. Prints will be available at the show!

Transcendence

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to be involved in a project with a buddy of mine Chris Schwartz. The project, "Transcendence", is a chap book of poetry and artwork that chronicled a mans struggle with religion, faith, and relationships:

This book was penned over the course of two years (2006-2008), and the manuscript, replete with artwork, introduction, and afterword, was put together during another two years (2009-2010). This long process witnessed many twists and turns in the authors' lives, including my decision to join the Baha'i Faith and then move from Philadelphia to the Brussels area in early 2009. The quality of both the poems and the artwork, whose chronological development is not preserved in the order in which they appear herein, reflects much of that process.

It wasn't until 2011 that Ben and I settled upon licensing the manuscript via Creative Commons and passing it around informally, free of charge, among friends, family, and colleagues, who have been waiting patiently for its release since the writing and drawing process finished in 2008. For those who are not members of our circles, if this book finds its way into your hands or onto your hard disk, we pray that you find it a powerful experience.

Ben Vs. the Dry-Erase Board

I recently had the pleasure of providing the promotional art for Geekadelphia.com 's upcoming screening of 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' at the Trocadero Theater here in Philly. The original concept for the above piece started out as a crappy dry-erase marker drawing I did for my joe-job. They wanted the final art to look exactly like the original. So I took what pics I had of the board (now erased into history) into Photoshop and did a trace up then went to inks. I did a lot of little tweaks to almost everything to correct mistakes and add detail. The color was fun to play around with. I notice some artists these days use the gradient tool to get some nice fade effects going. This technique came in handy with the clouds and fire in the b/g.

Tone Deaf

So I'm playing around with screen tones in Photoshop getting mixed results and snags. Why use Photoshop for tone work? Well, it's the program I'm most familiar with. There are methods that I'd read up on that show you that toning is possible with Photoshop. I've used Manga Studio before but found it to be a lot like Photoshop only there were annoying little things that made it a lot not like Photoshop which turned me off to it. Now, I shouldn't criticize it that much, this was a really early version of the program so by now all those little bugs have probably been squashed. In fact I just watched a video on the Manga Studio homepage where Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen fame) gives a run through of how he uses the program to pull off some amazing work. In the end Manga Studio is the better choice for tones, seeing as how it's built from the ground up for comic production. But Photoshop will always be my first love and will probably be open right next to whatever other program I'm using at the moment filling in the gaps other programs leave open.

I did these for a flier that'll be used to advertise an manga art class I'll be teaching in December '10. I'm getting back into doing my inks by hand. The overall look achieved by doing it the old fashion way is something that hard to obtain digitally. Plus, I'm learning new cleaning techniques for my finished inks. Such as adjusting the 'Levels' on your line work before doing a 'Threshold' helps you get a much cleaner result.

These are from two years ago I believe. At one point I had the chance to possibly work on a manga adaption of 'Avatar: the Last Airbender'. Things fell through though and the project wound up not going anywhere. I ended up totally forgetting about them. Thought it was worth posting since I hardly have any sequential work up on here. It's also some work that has tone on it which is oddly enough kinda rare for me.

I'll have more sequentials to share in the coming weeks.

A random observation while I was out of town...wrapped in a swanky comic strip!!

Did this really-really quick, 4 hrs total work time (that's pretty quick for a turtle like me). This is all in hopes of being faster mentally. Not to get hung up over little details. Feeling more confident behind each brush stroke without worrying about the consequences.

Above is a another quick one I did to practice painting backgrounds as well as characters. Color theory is a pain. The hardest part I found was matching ambient light to different parts of the figure as well as keeping the lighting the same throughout the entire piece. Like "would the light hitting her on the face look the same if it were hitting her skirt?" I haven't the foggiest :/

Either way, I look forward to doing more of these.

I have been away from the digi-painting scene for a couple of months now (literally had to blow the dust off my Wacom pad) and needed to dip my feet back into it to keep things fresh in memory.

Not wanting to spend a whole lot of time on this I decided to grab a sketch I particularly liked out of my book and throw some color to it.

I enjoy the overall loose feel this piece has. Most of my work, in my opinion, has a up-tight stodgy feel to it. Beginning to work in a sketchbook again has reminded me that it's ok to let my hair down every now and then so I can just...well...draw! Without having to worry about cleaning up after myself.

Above is my contribution to the Autumn Society's final show of the season, "Turning Japanese: a tribute to Japanese pop culture."

Originally I wanted to do all the text myself (this was a quickly passing thought)...I wound up doing all the text in Photoshop then going over top of each one with pen and marker to add in the individual mug shots. The Japanese text was accomplished with the help of a friend of mine.

Here's a piece I did a couple of months ago in June for the Autumn Society's '90's Cartoon' show held at Brave New Worlds Comics here in Philly.

It was an arduous journey finishing it, printing it, framing it in time but in the end I learned that:

A - If you're getting your work professionally printed, make sure to export your work in CMYK not RGB or else the printers will laugh at you ;)

and

B - Custom framing is spensive'.

In a few weeks I'll be posting my entry to the last Autumn Society show for the summer 2010 season. Stay tuned.

Here's a quickie I did for a friend of mine for her birthday. I think I'm getting more of a handle on producing work in Photoshop. I finished this under 5hrs total. Granted I just left the colors flat BUT the guesswork behind all of it seems to be disappearing. I'm realizing what I can leave loose and what I have to tighten up on, what the average audience would notice and what they probably wont catch. The art of turning off one's brain and not over thinking.

It felt good to be back in the basics. Using just pencil, pen, and marker from start to finish. Along my digital coloring journey I had forgotten how good a hand drawn color piece can feel when everything is said and done. It's a feeling you just don't get with digital work.

The good people over at the New York Anime Festival run a small contest every year to select their new mascot for that year's festival. The theme for this years convention is "Anime - New York - Halloween". 3 things that I had a hell of a time putting together. I chose a ninja since they're usually dark/shadowy characters that, at times, can be spooky. The color scheme I chose is brighter than your average ninja. I wanted to stay away from the stereotypical black uniform and go for something more autumn colored. My biggest hurdle with this was his head guard with the empire state building going across it. I think I did at least 3 revisions of it until i settled on something more simple.

Simple was the main objective of this piece. Since I tend to over think and go overboard with my work. My vision of a mascot is something you can display anywhere without having to worry about the little details being lost. At times I stopped and turned my brain off so that I could let the work come out of me naturally.

In the end I'm unsure of my chances of winning. Regretting not doing something with more of a unisex subject matter and believe that maybe a female mascot would probably have played better. Ah well.

I'd like to thank all the awesome people that came out to Free Comic Book Day yesterday May 1st at Captain Blue Hens' Comics in Newark, Delaware! The crowds and energy were great, I hope that everyone who that got a sketch done by me walked away satisfied. It was a balmy day and I only had time to do so many, gaah!

A special thanks goes out to the Captain Blue Hen gang that were very accommodating during the day. As well as all my fellow artists who were in the trenches along side me. I look forward to coming back next year :)

Uniformity

I've always been a fan of the character 'Makoto'. I could never play with the character to save my life but loved her for her design and attitude. Like 'Sakura' (character on the far left) only more hard hitting. Well this is sort of a 'what if' tribute. Usually Makoto would be sporting her Karate Gi but needing to attend school she'd probably be forced to wear a uniform which I doubt she'd like very much. Yeah, my imagination can geek like that.

A quick Chun Li I did for practice BUT also to celebrate the release of SUPER Street Fighter IV !

I had been playing around with a new set of special effect brushes that a friend had recently given to me. To my surprise there was a unique set that featured splotches/washes/splatter that accurately portrays the ' Sumi-e ' brush styling that's used in Street Fighter IV. It took a bit of tinkering but in the end I was really happy with the outcome ( ^_^ )

I recently joined the 'Autumn Society of Philadelphia', which is an collective of artists from...uh, Philadelphia. As well as from around the nation. Fellow illustrator 'Chogrin', who runs the society, is now working with Cartoon Network on the series featured above. This being my very first post to the society blog, I decided to go along with the current theme and dedicate a piece to Adv. Time.

I originally wanted to do this as a digi painting but decided to go with a cel shading style since it's more reflective of the show.

Tokusatsu a go go baby!

So I came down with a fever this past week, conveniently on the only 2 days i have off per week! Awesome! While I sat and gave into the inevitable aches, pains, coughing up of bodily fluid I decided to make the most of it and made myself a new avatar for 2010.

Recently I've had an affinity for all things Tokusatsu. From Kamen Rider to Giant Robo, they all hold a special place in my heart. And what a better way to geek out than becoming one yourself.

I decided to do all the coloring 'cel' style since I wasn't looking to spend too much time on it. And instead focused on color theory. For those who are ever stumped on which color schemes to roll with on certain pieces, I highly recommend using Kuler. It's run by Adobe systems so transferring color from the site to Photoshop is a cake walk. Plus it's all FREE :)

Playing around again with portraiture. Re-familiarizing myself with color theory.

This piece as well as the last were first done in graphite. Usually I'd ink over the graphite to give it more of a cleaner finish but I've found that skipping that step and going straight into color gives me almost the same look I want. Plus it saves me an hour or so of ink work.

Sakura Who?

Hello all,

so yeah I've put the previous 'Evil Sakura' piece on hold for now to focus on new subject matter. Why? Well it's just one of those artistic situations where I'll look at a piece long enough and spot one or two problem areas that I wanted to tackle. And over time those one or two small areas wound up giving birth to a problem with the whole piece. I may just wind up scraping it and doing another rendering of the character, that's how off put I am about it.

Painting is one area that I just don't excel in. In high school I dreaded having to do paintings with oils, acrylics, water color, etc. With the mixing/consistency of the colors to the different blending techniques, canvases and don't forget the plethora of brushes you can choose from...bah humbug!

As for digital painting, however, all those headaches are a distant memory. With my buddy Photoshop, I have an infinite amount materials at my disposal. I've dabbled with Photoshop painting in the past but was put off by the lame results I was getting. Fast forward to recently where I've acquired a neat set of brushes thanks to a fellow colleague of mine. Having them along with a lot of patience things started to come together.

Naruto (above) started out as a real quick sketch I did to get myself into the character. At first it was supposed to remain, just that, a 'quickie' for me to throw some color on and post, but after two days it wound up being more than that as you can see.

In the end I'm semi satisfied with the results. Considering most of my line art quality from the original sketch was stodgy at best. It was a great learning experience and I look forward to future paintings.

Hey there guys,

Spring has sprung upon us here in the western hemisphere, so it would behoove me to get with the updates around here.

The 'Evil' characters in the 'Street Fighter' lure have always fascinated me. They've taken characters such as Gouki (Akuma here in the U.S.) who I might add is already pure evil ...and make him MORE EVIL! Hah!! How does that work exactly? I dunno and frankly I don't care. Pure genius those heads at Capcom are.

So anyway, back in the heyday of fighting games we were introduced to a little gem called 'Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter ' my life was changed shortly after having sat down with this game for a few hours. I could blabber on and on about how scrumtrelecent it is but I'll spare you the geek speak and just digress for now. This game introduced us to 'Evil Sakura' or 'Sunburned Sakura' as she was also known. This was the only time she had in the entire franchise (to my knowledge). Her character being so rare it always stuck out in my head to do a piece dedicated to just her. Seeing as how I'm a sucker for doing off-beat subject matter. I wanted to take it just a step further and give her a Japanese goth/punk look. When the colors are finished on her it'll bring the look across more.

This will be the final 'Street Fighter' piece I'll be working on for a good while. Reason being? It's already the middle of May and I'm not close to where I wanna be with my work, gah! Plus, there's a wide range of fun subject matter out there to explore.

Stalking the Dark

So as of late I've been on a very short hiatus from working on portfolio stuff. The main reason is above. This was my submission for Udon Entertainments "DarkStalkers Tribute" book slated for release this summer. Udon calls upon artists from the far reaches of the globe to submit pin-ups of their favorite DarkStalker characters and out of over literally 2000 submissions only 200 some odd pieces are chosen. So I had heard about all this a week or two before it was due and raced to finish my entry. Anywho, I guess my expedited efforts showed a little too much in the final product cuz my work wound up not geting picked.

O well...( >_< ) sigh*

Sooo I took about 2 weeks off to cool off and recollect myself. I'm currently working on just 1 more Street Fighter piece then I'll be done and good for awhile regarding anything Capcom. I think I may go on a Naruto binge for a minute. Who knows.

Thunder Thighs

With all the hubb bubb in the air caused by the eminent release of Street Fighter 4 I've been on a bit of a Capcom binge.

I've noticed that with every new Street Fighter Game Chun Li's hips just keep on inflating. I mean at times it looks like she has 2 other people down there carrying her torso.

No other Capcom designer has done this better than Daigo Ikeno whom did the character work for SF 3rd strike & SF 4 as well as the Onimusha series and a few others.

So 'why the heck not'?, let's make light of those thick man killing thighs. I have no qualms what-so-ever with them, frankly I think they're sextastic.

Style wise in this piece I was experimenting with a more varied line weight with my inks. It works well for my pin ups and I may try it on my sequential work in the future.

Yea, it's been a few since I last posted anything, don't get me wrong I've been on the busy side of things... no really I have! For example last week I was in NYC for the NY Comic Con. So i needed to prep for that. But now I'm out of excuses and ready to head back into the studio. Here's a quick doodle I did just for Love day:

I'm also working on a piece to celebrate the eminent release of Street Fighter 4 on the 17th. Actually I think I may wind up doing 2 instead seeing as how rare it is that Capcom releases a fighting games these days. I mean when was the last time? 10 or more years! Resolutions!

So yea, 2 and a 1/2 weeks into the new year and I'm doing pretty good with sticking to my resolutions. I've been on a Anime binge as of late, mostly due to the fact that I recently acquired a 1 terabyte hard drive for which to store massive amounts of whatever tickles my fancy. In this case it's mostly entire series of shows that I've been missing out on ( I can't reveal the methods in which I obtain the stuff, I'll leave it up to you to put 2 and 2 together >_^). Anyway, expect more in the way of Anime related work from me in the months to come. I'll try my best to keep the subject matter lively. The above piece is a tribute to a series I'm following: "Gurren Lagaan". From a Anime studio I love: GAINAX. They so awesome...

Here's a sneak peak of a piece I'm working on. When it's all said and done it'll be in full color but I'm leaving it un-inked. I've noticed that some Japanese illustrators don't bother with ink and go straight to color. When done correctly it can be almost unnoticeable. It's important that I make all my lines as clean and dark as possible so I make less work for myself in Photoshop. I usually work with 2h lead which gives me more control over my line quality and cleanliness but can be hassle scanning cuz the contrast of the final penciles can be very light at times.

I've gotten a request to post the original pencils for the aforementioned wolvie pic. Soooooo yea here ya go! If you look closely I originally I wanted him with bone claws instead of his steely ones, just thought it'd fit the time period of a medieval ronin.

To celebrate the conclusion to Wolvie Wednesday, he asked friends of his to come up with their own renderings of our hairy hero. And nope I did not, in fact, color said piece. I had yet another talented buddy of mine Kizer>> http://kizer180.deviantart.com/, have his way with it. Which brought beautiful color ridden life to my otherwise dull pencil skratchings AND also made it 400 times better looking! Bravo to his awesomnessess!!

I chose the 'Lone Wolf and Cub' subject matter cuz...well...c'mon the man's a LONE WOLF for pete's sake! The claws with the swords and the baby carts?! It was just too tempting to leave alone.
